Snooky Serna Opens Up About Her Depression Problems Since Childhood, Seen In Her Life Story In 'Magpakailanman' This Saturday Night

SNOOKY SERNA says she had to think twice before agreeing that “Magpakailanman” do her life story. It will be shown tonight, “Ang Babae sa Likod ng Blusang Itim”, directed by Rechie del Carmen. “They coursed the offer through my manager, Leo Dominguez, pero pinag-isipan ko munang mabuti as I’m scared it might just open old wounds at maapektuhan pa ang two daughters ko. I eventually agreed on the condition that it will focus on my mental illness, dysthymic disorder which causes chronic depression. I was 10 years old when my mom first brought me to a psychiatrist and I was diagnosed to have it. Siempre, I’m in denial na may sakit ako. They gave me medicines but I refuse to take it. The doctor says it’s because I didn’t have a normal childhood. At 3 or 4, I was already acting in movies like ‘Living Doll’ and ‘Golden Child’. So maaga pa, I was subjected to pressure and stress. It’s also genetic kasi sa family namin, may depression talaga. As a teenager, people would make fun of me as babaeng pagong but they didn’t know I’m sick, ayokong humarap sa tao. I finally sought therapy when I was doing ‘Madonna, Babaeng Ahas’ for Regal at nakagat talaga ako ng ahas. I was at the Cardinal Santos for two weeks, having panic and anxiety attacks. Buti na lang I never became suicidal. Now, I’m more stable. I take my meds regularly, mood stabilizer and anti-depression. I thank God because my life is really full of miracles.”

“Magpakailanman” will start with her as a 14-year old Regal Baby and end at the present. Her ex-husband, Ricardo Cepeda, is played by Gary Estrada. “Napakabait na tao ni Ricardo and mahirap talaga maging asawa ang isang babaeng grabe ang mood swings gaya ko noon. I praise him and his partner now, Marina Benipayo, for taking good care of our daughters, Sam and Satchi, who are now both college graduates and work in the advertising industry. I’m so thankful na my two daughters, hindi nagmana sa akin. I wish my story would inspire others para hindi sila matakot magpatingin sa doktor. Kasi nagagamot naman ang depression. At 52, I’ve now come to terms with my life and I’ve learned to accept myself as I am. The Lord has been good to me. Hindi ako nawawalan ng projects. I’m now taping for a new show, ‘Pamilya Roces’, directed by Joel Lamangan. I play the sister of Gloria Diaz. Abangan nyo.”
