EPY QUIZON is getting good reviews for his portrayal of the Sublime Paralytic, Apolinario Mabini, who serves as the voice of reason in the historical epic, “Goyong, Ang Batang Heneral”. We tell him the producers should also produce a separate movie focusing on Mabini alone. “Gusto ko yan,” he says. “Sige nga, i-push nyo yan. Sana, matuloy.”
Epy is also in the cast of another movie, “Alimuom”, one of the six entries in the ToFarm Filmfest that starts showing in theaters today. It’s a futuristic film directed by Keith Sicat and set at a time when the air and soil have become so toxic that people live under biodomes. He represents the government as the Minister of Agriculture and he co-stars with Ina Feleo, Mon Confiado, Dido de la Paz and Karl Medina. “Everything here is controlled by the government, pero may sekreto rito ang gobierrno na itinatago nila sa mga mamamayan,” he adds. “Kung ano yun, malalaman nyo when you watch the movie. I play a gray character, tipong bida-kontrabida.”
Epy is also deadset on cultivating his career behind the camera. He has just directed a music video, “Lukso ng Dugo”, which is a call for peace and unity, with 20 artists singing ala-”We Are the World”, including Gary Valenciano, Bayang Barrios, Kyla, Ebe Dancel, Yeng Constantino, Champ Lui Pio, Karel Honasan, Jett Pangan and many more. He’s also directing a short film, “Bukal”, about the war in Mindanao, starring Ronnie Lazaro, Junjun Quintana, Rez Cortez and Alvin Anson. He’s a graduate of Ricky Lee’s screenwriting workshop and he has now come up with his new full length movie which he also intends to direct. “It’s a dark comedy with action,” he says. “I hope I can do it soon.”
His late dad, Dolphy, is once again being considered as National Artist. How does he feel about it? “Hindi na kami umaasa ng mga kapatid kong madedeklara siya. Ang mahalaga, may mga taong naniniwalang part na ng culture ang father namin kasi napatawa sila as King of Comedy. Wala naman nang kailangang patunayan pa ang tatay namin sa dami ng trophies niya. Basta we’re happy na sa history ng showbiz, naroroon siya sa puso ng bawat Pilipinong napatawa niya at patuloy pa rin niyang napapatawa kapag pinapanood nila ang movies niya ngayon.”
