RICHARD QUAN got his big break as an actor in the 1993 movie, “Saan Ka Man Naroroon”, where he supported Dawn Zulueta and Richard Gomez, produced by Reyna Films. “Bale 25 years na ako in showbiz,” he says at the presscon fo ToFarm Filmfest where he appears in the entry, “1957”, written and directed by Hubert Tibi.
He can no longer recall the total number of movies he has made but the most memorable are “Bakit May Kahapon Pa”, “Curacha, Babaeng Walang Pahinga” with Chito Rono, “Jose Rizal” with the late Marilou Diaz-Abaya, “Sidhi” with Joel Lamangan, “Ded na si Lolo” with the late Soxy Topacio, and “Citizen Jake” with Mike de Leon. He has also done lots of soaps with the top networks.
He says he now chooses the projects he wants to do. “Gusto ko, yung maganda ang script,” he says. “Hindi ako basta tanggap nang tanggap. When I read the script of ‘1957’, I agreed to do it right away. First screenplay and directorial debut ni Herbert Tibi, a very young filmmaker. Sabi ko talaga sa kanya, ang galing mo, you should write more scripts.”
He plays Carding in the story which is set in the year “1957”. “Isa akong dating miembro ng mga rebeldeng Hukbalahap na sumuko at naging magsasaka sa Bicol. Anak ko si Ronwaldo Martin at corn farmers kaming tenants ng isang abusive landlord, played by Menggie Cobarrubias. We were looking forward to having genuine land reform noong time ni Pangulong Ramon Magsaysay. We were so excited nang malaman naming bibisita siya sa bayan namin sa Bicol para mailapit namin sa kanya ang mga reklamo namin against our landlord. But we all know what happened in history sa ating Pangulong Magsaysay. Bago siya nakarating sa bayan namin, he died in a tragic plane crash in Cebu. Lahat yun ipapakita rito sa ‘1957’ na entry sa ToFarm Filmfest na palabas na ngayon sa mga sinehan.”
