Cherie Gil Wants To Do Her Iconic Scene In 'Bituing Walang Ningning' With 'Onanay' Co-Star Nora Aunor

CHERIE GIL has this amusing Lavinia Challenge in her social media account where she uploads videos of herself reprising her role as Lavinia Arguelles in the 1985 movie “Bituing Walang Ningning”. In that iconic scene, she splashes wine on Sharon Cuneta’s face (as Dorina Pineda) saying that now immortal line: “You’re nothing but a second rate trying hard copycat.” She now throws water on the faces of her volunteer celebrity victims. This started in a party where she playfully reenacted the same scene with Atom Araullo (with whom she did the movie “Citizen Jake”).

The video was posted on the net and it became viral. Soon, her co-stars in the movie “Kasal” also volunteered to be her willing new Dorina Pineda victims: Bea Alonzo, Paulo Avelino and Ricky Davao. You can check out the videos in her Instagram account: @the_real_lavinia_arguelles

Her goal now is to splash water on the faces of 100 people. She hopes Sharon will be the last victim, to make it a full circle. “Pero wala akong pinipilit,” she says. “Basta kung gusto lang nila. At wala rin akong deadline. Let’s just see what happens.”

Other stars who have participated in her Lavinia Challenge include Agot Isidro and Iza Calzado. But recently, the tables have been turned as it’s Cherie who became the victim, with her mom Rosemarie Gil splashing water on her face. Right now, she and her mom are rivals on TV because her show with GMA-7, “Onanay”, is up against her mom’s show on ABS-CBN, “Ngayon at Kailanman”.

Cherie made a script for the video where she asks her mom: “So, how are the ratings of our show against yours?”

Her mom found this insulting then throws a glass of water on her face while delivering the iconic line from “Buting Walang Ningning”. It was really very amusing and Cherie said: “Ha ha ha! Only my mother can do this to me! Thank you, mom, for being such a good sport.”

Her wish now is that she’d be able to do that same scene with her “Onanay” co-star, Nora Aunor. “I want to do it to Ate Guy, but I don’t think I have the courage! She had agreed to do it, but it has to be properly planned or there has to be a moment. And we have yet to find the time.”

How is it working with Ate Guy? “Masarap siyang katrabaho. Simple and totoong tao, walang arte sa
katawan. When she makes a mistake, she even humbly apologizes, as if she doesn’t think we’re glad she did make a mistake so we could realize that an icon like her is also human, after all. It makes me less nervous. Ha ha ha! We’re really happy because our show is well received by viewers and is doing well in the ratings, while advertisers give it their full support. This week, I’ll warn Kate Valdez to stay away from Mikee Ouintos and her family. Sabi ko, lalaki dapat ang maghabol sa babae at di gaya ng ginagawa niyang siya ang naghahabol kay Enrico Cuenca after she learned that Mikee as Maila was ordered by their mom to break up with Enrico as Oliver.”

Considered as local showbiz’ classiest contravida, Cherie belongs to the formidable clan of actors known as the Eigenmanns. She’s happy and proud that her nephew Gabby Eigenmann and her niece Andi Eigenmann just won awards recently. Gabby got best supporting actor awards from the Star Awards for TV and Asian Academy Creative Awards for his role as the closet gay villain in “Contessa”, while Andi was named best actress in the International Filmfest Manhattan in New York for her title role portrayal of “The Maid in London”. Even her mom, the comebacking Rosemarie Gil, just won the best actress award in the Cine Filipino Filmfest for her title role performance as the dying wife in “Delia and Sammy”.

“I’m proud to be part of acting royalty,” says Cherie. “Do you know that Eigenmann is a German word that means ‘my own man’, and yes, we all do dance to the beat of our own drum. With the new generation of Eigenmann’s carrying the torch for our family, no role is tough for us. I’d like our family of actors to always be remembered for our fine work in showbiz.”
