JASON ABALOS is a transferee from ABS-CBN and he now supports another transferee, his good friend Rayver Cruz, in the new GMA-7 soap, “Asawa Ko, Karibal Ko”, that starts airing this Monday.
“I’m happy to support Rayver at lovers pa nga kami rito,” he says. “Kaya lang, hindi kami magkikita. I’m Nathan Bravante, a closet gay rito na anak ng politician. For the sake of politics, pinilit ako ng parents kong sina Ricardo Cepeda and Jean Saburit to marry Kris Bernal. But hindi ako happy talaga, so I will have a sex change operation at yung character kong si Nathan, magiging si Venus, played by Thea Tolentino. Siya na ang makakaeksena ni Rayver.”
So it’s a short role? “Yes, parang special participation kasi I will be seen doon lang sa first two weeks ng show. Most of my scenes are with Kris as my wife na akala, nambababae ako when she saw a lipstick sa gamit ko. Di niya alam, ako pala ang mismong gumagamit noon as I am transitioning into a woman.”
Doesn’t he mind playing such a short role? “No, I found it challenging nga to wear dresses and put on five inch high heels. Eventually, I fake my own death, had sex reassignment surgery and comes out as a new person, isang babae na. I didn’t know how to interpet my role kasi first time time ko to do it, so to prepare for it, I took workshops, interviewed transgenders I’ve met and watched Eddie Redmayne na naging babae rin sa pelikulang ‘Danish Girl’. With the help of our director, Mark de la Cruz, I think naitawid ko naman nang maayos ang role ko as Nathan na naging Venus. Excited na nga akong malaman how viewers will react to my character and receive my performance. I made it sure na hindi magiging basta katawa-tawa ang acting ko. I hope the show will help people realize the plight and experiences that transgenders go through, the issues they have to deal with to gain more acceptance in our society and not to just judge them.”What is the reaction of his girlfriend, Vickie Rushton, when she learned he’s playing such a role? “Okay naman. She visited me on the set na naka-makeup ako and wearing women’s clothes so she saw me as a girl at ang sabi niya, ang ganda mo! Supportive siya. She knows naman that this is just part of my job as an actor, so okay lang sa kanya.”
