TONY LABRUSCA surprised and impressed a lot of people in his movie debut in the Cinemalaya entry, “ML”, where he played an unsuspecting student tortured by a deranged retired colonel, interpreted by Eddie Garcia. He now has a followup movie, an entry in the Cinema One Originals filmfest, “Double Twisting Double Back”, tagged as an erotic sports thriller set in the world of gymnastics and directed by Joseph Abello who won best director for “What Home Feels Like” in ToFarm Filmfest 2017.
Tony plays Badger, a gymnast who works hard to be the best in his field and it’s good he went into gymnastics when he was 15, so he did all his own gymnastic and acrobatic scenes in the movie. “The character is not just very challenging physically but also mentally and emotionally, kasi may pagka-psychological siya dahil it also tackles the issue of sex addiction,” he says. “Actually, mas nadalian ako sa scenes involving athletics, doing somesaults in the air and backflips. Ang mahirap was the dramatic scenes, lalo na kapag madaling araw na and you required to do sobrang drama at 4 or 5 in the morning. Ang hirap nang umiyak nang gan’ong oras. I have to thank our director and my co-stars for helping me out.”
So how did the director treat the subject of sex addiction? “It’s a delicate subject so you have to approach it with much sensitivity,” says Direk Joseph, a UST advertising cum laude graduate who used to be a GMA-7 art director. “We don’t want to judge the character. Lahat naman, may addiction of some sort, puede sa shopping, sa gadgets, sa work. Nagkataon lang, yung addiction niya is sa sex so you just have to show the human side of being a sex addict without necessarily condemning them.”
Supporting Tony in the movie are Joem Bascon, Elora Espano and Acey Aguilar.
