KEN CHAN made quite a lasting impression as the transgender lead in the hit afternoon soap, “Destiny Rose”, that some folks thought he’s really gay. Now, he is once again very believable as a mildly autistic young man in “My Special Tatay” and he seems to be acting like one even if he’s already off cam.
“Yes, nadadala ko yung character kung minsan, kahit wala na ako sa taping,” he says. “But I’m really glad na napakaganda ng feedback, hindi lang sa acting ko kundi pati sa buong show kasi it helps viewers understand more and accept more yung mga taong kagaya ni ‘Special Tatay’ na ginagampanan ko.”
In real life, Ken is really a very special son. He’s the breadwinner in the family and it’s really unfortunate that his dad is currently suffering from cancer of the esophagus. “He’s undergoing chemotherapy,” he says. “Naka-12 sessions na siya in six months and he’s getting better naman. Pero mino-monitor din ang kidneys niya kasi he had kidney transplant before.”
Most of his earnings go to his dad’s medication. “Mahirap talaga ang pinagdaraanan niya but I don’t mind kahit ibigay ko sa tatay ko lahat ng sahod ko, basta gumaling lang siya. My mindset is I don’t my how much we spend, basta gumaling lang siya. Buti na lang at may show ako ngayon at lagi siyang nanonood ng ‘My Special Tatay’ at natutuwa naman siya sa performance ko. He’s very happy that my career is doing well.”
It’s good that he is not a spendthrift. “I value my earnings and I don’t spend it irresponsibly na basta gastos lang nang gastos. Ever since ,hindi naman ako maluho. I’m not the type na kung ano yung latest gadget, kailangang magkaroon din ako ng ganoon. Even my phone, simple lang. Basta may magamit. Mas masaya akong nakakatulong ako sa dad ko at buong family namin.”
No wonder that he is so blessed his show, “My Special Tatay”, continues to gain more and more viewers. “Sana nga, mas dumami pa po ang manonood at mas tumaas pa ang ratings namin para mas tumagal din kami sa ere at tuloy-tuloy lang ang trabaho ko,” Ken prays.
