NOW THAT REGINE Velasquez’ three night concert series at New Frontier is over, people are now clamoring for her to have a joint concert with Lea Salonga for the first time. Lea herself had just finished her 40th anniversary concert at the PICC Plenary Hall. The Lea-Regine concert can be a reality now that both of them are with the Kapamilya Network who can help produce it for them, just like what they did with Regine’s concert.
Both Regine and Lea have expressed their desire to do a concert together some day. This will truly be a big event in the local music scene if ever if would take place. And we’re sure music lovers will all flock to it since both Lea and Regine are esteemed icons and treasures in their own right.
Lea and Regine are contemporaries and almost of the same age. Regine is slightly older as she was born on April 22, 1970, while Lea was born on February 22, 1971. Regine initially made it in showbiz as the grand winner in the 1984 singing contest, “Ang Bagong Kampeon”. As a teener, she did comedies with Viva like “The Untouchables” and “Elvis and James”, then was reintroduced as a leading lady in “Wanted Perfect Mother”.
Lea, in turn, started with musical theatre, doing plays like “Annie” where she played the title role and later doing movies as a child star in “Tropang Bulilit”, “Like Father Like Son” and “Ninja Kids”. As a teener, she has appeared with Regine in the Metro-Filmfest entry, “Pik Pak Boom”, a comedy entry from Viva Films which has two separate stories and co-starred them with now QC Mayor Herbert Bautista.
Lea went international with “Miss Saigon” in 1989, which gave her prestigious theatre awards in London and New York. She also did other musicals, notably “Les Miserables”, where she has the distinction of being the the first Asian to do the roles of Fantine and Eponine. She also voiced the popular hit songs “A Whole New World” and “Reflection” of the female leads in “Aladdin” (1992) and “Mulan” (1998).
Between them, it’s Regine who’s going to be busier in the days to come as she already has a scheduled concert in time for the 2019 Valentine’s Day. Then she’ll be part of ABS-CBN’s new reality show, “Idol Philippines”, and will also start taping a sitcom with her husband Ogie Alcasid. As for Lea, she has some commitments abroad.
A joint concert will be a real big treat for those who wish to see them perform together on the same stage for the first time, so their fans should now start praying for this wish to become a reality, hopefully sometime next year.
