But eventhough the film has yet to be shown, Joel is now starting to shoot another new movie, “Burak (Filth)”, a socially relevant film about the dregs of society who are victims of poverty and corruption. This is written by Eric Ramos, produced by Dennis C. Evangelista for Mrs. Baby Go of BG Productions International. The story is set in a small island on Manila Bay called Sitio Onse, a sanctuary for the lower depths of all kinds of criminals who are all beholden to a corrupt cop, Julius, played by Jay Manalo.
The story is told from the point of view of Cherry Pie Picache as Marya, Jay’s former lover who he brought to the island and where she’s now considered as the First Lady. “Matagal na akong hindi nakagawa ng indie film but after reading the script of ‘Burak’, nagustuhan ko agad,” she says. “I love my character, a probinsyana who goes to the big city for a better life but ends up being a prostitute and a swindler, a snatcher. My character maybe a con artist, but she’s actually a victim of society who becomes a survivor. At this point in my career, I really want to do something na makabuluhan like this. What the movie really shows is that even among criminals, may natitira pa ring kabutihan.
Gaano ka man kasama ang isang tao, may inherent goodness pa rin sa kanya. Si Marya kasi rito, habang nangi-snatch sa Luneta, bigla na lang tinabihan ng isang batang babaeng may down syndrome, si Mariel Therese na mayaman pala at naligaw lang after mapahiwalay sa pamilya niya. She shows kindness to the child, isasama niya sa isla, and doon maaapektuhan ang buhay nila ng mga kasama niya. I’m also excited to be reunited with Direk Joel, who gave me my first acting award as best supporting actress for ‘Melinda’.”
