BIBETH ORTEZA is now better known as a writer and director but she actually started as a versatile actress who does TV, movie and theatre work with equal ease and competence. On stage, she was last seen in the production of “Boeing Boeing” in Singapore in 2017 as the wacky Roza. She now plays an important role in Repertory Philippines’ production of “Silent Sky”, written by Lauren Gunderson.
The play is about women who made groundbreaking work in space explorations and whose contributions have been overlooked by history. Henrietta Leavitt is the central character (to be played Cathy Azanza Dy) an unsung hero and astronomer at Harvard College Observatory in the first decades of the1900s.
Her discoveries provided the key to measuring the distance between our planet and the other galaxies, paving the way for more famous astronomers, like Edwin Hubble. Gunderson’s play juxtaposes familiar conflicts in the lives of career women, like career versus romance and family obligations, told with wit and poignancy.
Bibeth will play the role of Annie Cannon, Leavitt’s stiff-necked colleague whose approach is by the book and has a strong leaning for women suffragists.
“Silent Sky” was first shown in March of last year at Onstage Theatre in Makati and will now be shown on a limited encore performance on the first two weekends of the coming month of February (February 1, 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10) co-produced by Reine Productions and Repertory Philippines. It will be shown Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM, with matinee on Saturdays and Sundays at 3 PM.
Aside from this play, Bibeth is also busy as an actress in the movie “Foolish Heart”, a romcom starring JM de Guzman and Arci Munoz, directed by Eduardo Roy Jr. of such acclaimed indie films as “Quick Change” and “Pamilya Ordinaryo” who is now making his first mainstream film.
