DEREK RAMSAY says that when he was informed that he’d be working with Andrea Torres for his first soap with GMA-7, the first thing he did is to check her out in Instagram. “I was looking at her pictures and her IG stories and I saw how fit she is,” he says. “E, ako, kain nang kain and she’s there looking like that. So I was pressured and I was encouraged to also go to the gym and be fit before we start taping our show. Kailangang masabayan ko siya. Before we even met, I texted her and told her I’m excited to work with her.”
So how is it working with Andrea? “She’s very professional and I admire her dedication to her craft. Wala siyang kaarte-arte and she’s the kind who looks you straight in the eye when she talks to you. From the first day of taping, we became comfortable agad with each other.”
He has done several movies about infidelity from “No Other Woman” to “Secret Affair”. How is “The Better Woman” different from the past similar materials he has done before? “Very different. Kasi rito, the women I got involved with happen to be twin sisters. Andrea plays twins here, Jasmine and Juliet. I am married to Jasmine and we live in a beach resort in La Union.
"Then, while I’m on a business trip to Manila, I met Juliet who works as a pole dancer in a night club. I was so surprised kasi I didn’t know na may twin sister pala ang wife ko and I also get attracted to her. Nandun yung magiging big conflict sa story. Who between the twin sisters is ‘The Better Woman’? Actually, may iba pang projects na ipinakita sa akin ang GMA aside from this, but ito ang pinili ko kasi it really has an interesting and intriguing premise.”
Some netizens accuse him of using his recent breakup with Joanna Villablanca to drum up interest for “The Better Woman”. What can he say about this? “I’m not the type of guy who would use my personal life just to promote a new project. Ang daming accusations sa akin. I’m not the marrying type daw, which is not true. I want to have my own marriage and my role models are my own parents who have been married to each other for so long. But I have to be sure.
"My relationships naman, tumatagal, a. Four to five to six years. When I signed up with GMA, di ba she was still there sa contract signing? You think it’s easy to let go of someone? With our breakup, I lost not only her but also her daughter Sophie, who’s very dear and I treat like my own. I’m now building a new house. Para sa amin sana, but now I’m the only one who’d live in it.”
He’s not thinking of a possible reconciliation. “It hurts but it’s time to move on. Not everything in your life works out the way you want it to. We were together for six years and I will surely cherish the times we were together in my heart. She’ll always have a place there, along with her daughter Sophie. But I’m sure she will fall in love again, I will fall in love again, after all, we’re all designed for love. And I hope she will eventually meet the right guy for her.
"Meantime, I’ve just resumed my showbiz career with ‘The Better Woman’ on GMA-7 so I want to focus on this muna. Andrea Torres and I, also our director, Mark Sicat de la Cruz, we all vowed to make this show something the viewer will want to watch every night so we’re all pulling our resources to make it work.”
GMA Telebabad’s sked is being reshuffled starting this Monday. “Sahaya” will now be shown after “24 Oras”, followed by “The Better Woman” and “Love You Two”.
