NADINE LUSTRE won two best actress awards, the FAMAS and the Urian, for her acting in “Never Not Love You”, but she doesn’t put in her head that she’s now an award-winning actress. “I don’t want to put pressure on myself na dapat mas galingan ko at kailangan mahigitan ko pa ang nagawa ko before dahil may awards na ako,” she says. “Basta my priority is just to enjoy what I’m doing. Just like in my new movie, ‘Indak’, it’s a dance movie. About 80 percent of it, puro dancing, so iba naman ito.”
But it’s not only in acting that she has won awards but also in music. She won four trophies at the MYX Music Awards 2019, including Artist of the Year as well as Female Artist of the Year. She also bagged the Music Video of the Year Award for her song, “Stay Up”, and she shared the Soundtrack of the Year Award with beau James Reid for their song “Prom” that was used in their movie “Never NOt Love You”. Now, she displays her dancing skills in full force in “Indak”.
“It’s a new challenge for me kasi napakahirap gumawa ng dance movie. We have to undergo a lot of training for our production numbers. Pang-competition yung dance numbers namin so it’s not easy. After the shoot, masakit talaga ang katawan mo. But it’s good I really enjoy dancing and we’re all friends ng mga kasama ko sa movie, kaya okay lang.”
Did she get a double for the difficult dance sequences? “No, I did everything myself. Ako mismo ang gumawa ng lahat ng numbers kasi gusto ko rin ma-experience, pati yung mga lifting na hinahagis ka. At one time, na-sprain ang paa ko, pero tuloy pa rin ang shoot.”
In the story, she plays Jen, a girl in an island who did a dance video that went viral. But she is traumatized by dancing because of a bad experience and no longer wants to dance. It’s Sam Concepcion as Vin who convinced her to go out of her comfort zone and return to dancing by joining the group Indak Pilipinas that is set to compete in an international dance contest in Korea where dance teams from various other countries will converge. “Some of the scenes in ‘Indak’ were shot on location South Korea,” adds Nadine. “We got to work with some Korean dancers and we all had fun. Masaya kami sa shoot.”
Early this year, she did “Ulan” with Carlo Aquino, and now, she’s paired with Sam in “Indak”. Looks like Viva wants to push her as a solo actress. Doesn’t she miss James? “I do, but then, it’s good for us to work with others so we can both grow. Para ma-miss din ng fans namin ang love team namin.”
A lot of her fans were disappointed when she was not chosen by ABS-CBN to play the role of Darna as they were rooting for her after Liza Soberano backed out. How does she feel about it? “Well, I’m really flattered that they were cheering for me. But never naman akong nag-expect at hindi rin naman ako nag-audition, so okay lang, it’s not an issue for me. And I’m happy for the one chosen, si Jane de Leon. Na-meet ko na siya through some common friends and I wish her all the best.”
Doesn’t James get jealous now that she’s paired with Sam? “Not at all. He and Sam are very good friends. Also, hindi marunong magselos yun at wala naman siyang dapat ipagselos.”
