DERRICK MONASTERIO is elated that he’s finally given a new show on primetime, “Beautiful Justice”. His last appearance was in the afternoon soap, “Dragon Lady”, but it was just a short guest role.
“In ‘Beautiful Justice’, maganda at full length ang role ko,” he says. “I play an agent of the PDEA or Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency na napagbintangang kasabwat ng isang drug syndicate. Nang pasabugin ang yate with the bad guys, napasama ako.
"Everyone thinks I died in the explosion, including my girlfriend, played by Gabbi Garcia. But it turns out, hindi pala ako namatay and I have to go into hiding as several people are after my neck dahil may malaking sekreto akong puede kong pasabugin implicating people in high places.”
He’s also glad to do an action role for the first time. “Yes, we all underwent special training to prepare us for the action scenes. But I really like yung twist sa character ko. Hindi siya one-dimensional kaya nakaka-challenge gawin. Hindi boring.
"But of course, hindi ko pa puedeng i-reveal lahat ng mangyayari kasi spoiler yan. Basta viewers will surely be surprised sa story developments as the series is aired. I’m really thankful to GMA for giving me this good project and this great role.”
What can he say that they’ll be up against Coco Martin’s toprating show? “We’re all honored na kami ang napiling ipantapat but siempre, pressured din. But then we’ll just do our best para mapaganda ang aming show.
"Although sina Yasmien Kurdi, Bea Binene at Gabbi Garcia ang main na magdadala nito dahil first time na mga babae ang maga-action, lahat kami ng buong cast, we all pledged our full cooperation, plus the direction of Direk Mark Reyes, so I think may laban naman kami, we have a good fighting chance para panoorin din kami ng tao.”
It’s his first time to be paired with Gabbi who used to be more identified with Ruru Madrid but is now officially on with Khalil Ramos. How is it working with her? “We’re good. Magkasundo kami. We talk about a lot of things so hindi kami nabo-bore kapag magkasama kami sa taping. Masaya siyang kakulitan. Ha ha ha!”
He admits he’s currently loveless after breaking up with his Australian girlfriend named Kathleen Paton who won as Miss Manila last year. “It just didn’t work at halos one year na rin akong loveless,” he says. “Hindi naman ako naghahanap, lalo na ngayon busy ako sa trabaho. I go out dating, pero hanggang dun na lang muna.
"I tried theatre acting in ‘Rak of Aegis’ and I’m glad na very positive naman ang feedback sa very first stage acting ko, pati sa singing ko ng Aegis songs. I love the discipline of theater and I gained so much from my experience kasi bawal magkamali on stage, walang take 2. Now, I’m excited to appear in more plays.”
