BIANCA UMALI says 2019 is a very good year for her. She had a hit drama show, “Sahaya”, which got rave reviews and she also got to do several movies. Now, more than anything else, she’s going international, playing the lead role of the Chosen One in HBO Asia’s action-fantasy series, “Half Worlds”.
Then, just last Thursday, she got her own star in GMA Networks’ Walk of Fame, along with other Kapuso stars like Yasmien Kurdi and Kris Bernal.
“Ang dami talagang magandang nangyari for sa taong ito,” she says. “Naging emotional ako when I found out ako ang napili nila sa HBO Asia. I really wasn’t expecting na ako ang makukuha nila roon kasi, when I was asked to audition, ni hindi ko pa alam what is it for.”
The show’s director, Mikhail Red, attests to this. “She came in sa latter part ng audition and she was not even aware there’s gonna be an audition. She didn’t know anything about the project, because it’s still top secret at that time and we met her and talked to her.
"We quickly saw that she has so many parallels and similarities with the character, the lead of ‘Halfworlds’ . And on the spot, she did an audition and I think she even cried and she was super emotional in that audition. She blew us away.”
“Half Worlds” is about local folklore and she will play the role of Alex, a half human and half encanto who will be the instrument in finding a special plant that will heal encantos from their ailment that makes them hungry for human flesh.
Bianca now considers it such a big achievement in her career to be doing an international series for HBO Asia. “When I was told I got the part, talagang sobrang natulala ako sa pagka-overwhelmed. I’m sure my late mom and dad prayed for me and they continue to guide me even if they left me early. Nandiyan pa rin sila in heaven watching over me.”
Bianca has also just renewed her contract with GMA Network. “Thank you sa aking mga boss sa aking network at sa GMA management sa patuloy na tiwala at sa pagmamahal na ibinibigay nila sa akin. Isang malaking karangalan pong patuloy na maging Kapuso. Hindi ko naman hinihingi ang lahat, pero binibiyayaan po nila ako and bi
"nibigay po nila sa akin all the opportunities para maging lalong maganda ang takbo ng career ko.”
Atty. Gozon shared how impressed he is with Bianca’s acting talent. "Alam nyo yang si Bianca, talagang homegrown Kapuso ‘yan. Ito ang nagpapatunay na itong ating mga homegrown na artista, hindi lamang kinikilala rin sa ating bansa kundi hanggang abroad. Hindi balewala ‘yang HBO. Talagang mahusay pumili yan kaya tayo'y hindi nagkakamali sa ating mga pinipiling artista."
At the GMA Walk of Fame unveiling, Bianca admits she’s now also very happy with rumored BF Ruru Madrid, although they have yet to officially admit their romance. “He’s very supportive at happy siya sa project kong ito with HBO Asia. Yan naman ang maipagmamalaki ko sa kanya, very supportive. Pareho kami, nagsusuportahan kami sa isa’t isa.”
So can she say she is happy and in love? “Yes” is her short but meaningful reply. As for Ruru himself, he might be lucky in love with Bianca but not in his career.
He has no new soap in sight and his last movie, “Cara X Jagger”, was first day, last day in some moviehouses. It’s said some fans are not happy that he snatched her away from her original ka-love team, Miguel Tanfelix.
