DIRECTOR MIKHAIL RED says his horror-action movie, “Block Z”, was one and a half a years in the making.
“It’s a genre movie na tinanggap ko kasi high school pa lang ako, lifelong fantasy ko nang gumawa ng zombie movie,” he says. “So when I was asked to do one by a big studio, game ako agad. It took 30 days in a span of five months to complete the principal photography, tapos mahirap din ang post production.
"Maraming klaseng zombies, since the time of George Romero’s zombie flicks, pero dito, we chose na gawing mabibilis yung zombies, hahabulin ka talaga ng full speed. Horror siya but with adventure-thriller elements.
"May pagka-’Battle Royale’ showing students killing each other kasi yung zombie epidemic happened in a university nang magkaroon ng viral outbreak and the whole school was locked down para walang makatakas o makalabas.”
He said it’s very challenging to do “Block Z” because they have to audition even the extras who play zombies in the movie.
“We gave them a workshop and an acting coach para malaman nila how infected zombies move, how they twitch their heads, and how they attack people. Tapos, naka-prosthetics sila all throughout, there’s a lot of fighting, stunts, blood, it’s gruesome, gory.
"Then we have to get the perfect cast sa lead stars para makaka-relate talaga ang audience and I’m glad lahat sila magagaling, very talented, todo bigay ang energy nila, from Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia to Ian Veneracion, Ina Raymundo, Dimples Romana, Maris Racal, Mccoy de Leon, Yves Flores and the rest of the cast. It took sometime to complete the movie, but now we cannot wait for you to see it.”
We ask the entire cast what their favorite zombie movie is and here are their replies.
Joshua, Julia and Maris - “World War Z” which starred Brad Pitt. Ina - “28 Days Later” and its sequel, “28 Weeks Later”. Dimples and Yves Flores - “Train to Busan”.
Mccoy - “Zombieland” and “Kingdom”. Ian V - “From Dusk Til Dawn”. For Direk Mikhail -the French film “The Night Eats the World”, the Japanese anime “High School of the Dead” and the video game “Last of Us” developed by Naughty Dog for Sony.
