CONEY REYES was last seen as Alden Richards’ mom in “Vctor Magtanggol” in 2018. She intentionally didn’t accept any assignment after that as she wanted to rest for a while.
But for the new year 2020, she’s now back in GMA-7’s new primetime drama, “Love of My Life” that started airing last night.
“May offers naman but I felt rest muna ako,” she says. “And also, I helped in the campaign of my youngest son, Vico, as Pasig mayor. Now, 65 na ko, age of retirement na, but I’m just happy that at my age I continue to get good offers from both networks.
"It’s nice to work again with GMA again kasi dito naman talaga ako nag-start in 1975 as host ng ‘Student Canteen’ and later, ‘Eat Bulaga’, and also my drama show na ‘Coney Reyes Mumar Studio’ na naging ‘Coney Reyes on Camera.’ Now, I’m happy to be part of ‘Love of My Life’ that is one of their offeriings for their 70th anniversary.
"The offer to do this came at a time na ready na ako to work again. It’s a joy and a blessing to be working with such a talented group of artists led by Carla Abellana, Rhian Ramos, Tom Rodriguez, Mikael Daez and all our co-stars, along with our brilliant director, Don Michael Perez, and the entire production staff who are all very professional to work with. We learn so much working each other.”
In the story, she plays the Gonzales family matriarch, Isabella, a wealthy widow with her own business empire. She has two sons. Tom as Stefano is her favorite and Mikael as Nikolai is her rebellious black sheep who she blames for the accidental death of her husband and her sons’ dad.
In a trade gathering, she meets Carla as Adelle and their relationship starts on the wrong foot. Little does she know that Carla will be the girl Tom would choose to marry.
“Antagonist ako kay Carla rito, specially when we learn that Tom is suffering from a terminal illness and I encouraged his first girlfriend, Rhian as Kelly, to live with us in the same house along with her and Tom’s love child,” adds Coney.
“It’s a very unusual set up and the show how pain and suffering can bring together different characters na iba-iba ang ugali for the sake of their dying loved one.”
Coney, of course, is very proud of the very positive feedback Vico is getting as Pasig mayor. “Bata pa yan, talagang he loves reading about history and politics na. He has always had simple needs. He rarely asks for anything for himself. He is very focused on serving others.
"Bata pa yan, pag birthday niya, he chooses to do outreach programs for orphanages. Elementary pa lang siya, his teachers are already praising him for his leadership qualities.
"So ayan, talagang devoted siya sa kanyang public service sa mga taga-Pasig. As his mother, I will always just be here to support him.”
What can she say when some folks pressure Vico to find a wife soon since he’s already 30 years old? “Naku, huwag nilang pilitin yung anak ko. Bayaan muna nilang mag-focus sa calling na ibinigay ngayon sa kanya ni God.
"Kung ako nga, hindi nakikialam sa love life niya, e. Hindi ko sinasabing mag-girlfriend na siya. Kung meron naman, I know him, kusa siyang magsasabi sa akin. Basta darating yan, in God’s own time. May ilalaang right girl para sa kanya.”
