LOCAL AWARD GIVING BODIES have been affected by the corona lockdown. In the U.S., they gave away their awards early. The Golden Globe Awards was held in January while the Academy Awards or Oscar was held in February.
Here, the first award giving body scheduled to give out its awards was the Guillermo Mendoza Awards for Box Office King and Queen last March, with Alden Richards and Kathryn Bernardo all set to be honored for the huge success of “Hello, Love, Goodbye” and Aga Muhlach for “Miracle in Cell No. 7”.
But they have wisely decided to postpone it because of the health crisis we're now experience. Only God knows as to when it will be rescheduled.
Other award-giving bodies who were affected by the lockdown are the Star Awards for movies by the Philippine Movie Press Club, the Eddy Awards by SPEED (entertainment editors), the Urian by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, Luna Awards of the Film Academy of the Philippines (said to be the industry awards even if many winners don’t even attend their awards nights).
Then there's also the CMMA or Catholic Mass Media Awards and the FAMAS (administered by Ricky Lee for the past two years, but it's now being handled by directors connected with the DGPI or Directors Guild of the Philippines, not the KDPP.)
Aside from them, there are other minor award giving bodies handed out by various organizations like Gawad this and that, Gandingan this and that, young critics versus ancient critics. Yes, it’s to be admitted that just like beauty pageants, award-giving bodies have become a dime-a-dozen in our country.
There are also many local film festivals like Cine Malaya, Cinema One, Sinag Maynila, Singkuwento Filmfest, Cine Filipino, QCinema Filmfest, Pista ng Pelikulang PIliino, Metro Manila Filmfest, etc. and all of them also hand out their own set of awards for best film, acting and technical awards.
Obviously, giving awards has become a pandemic in itself and the situation has become somewhat confusing for the ordinary moviegoer, what with each body giving a set of winners so different from that of the other award-giving bodies. Well, as they say, to each his own.
They all aim to honor outstanding work like good writing and direction, superb performances, and fine technical credits, but the taste and perception of the people who give out the awards (some of which, lamentably, are for sale to the highest bidder) differ from one another.
As they say, different strokes for different folks, leaving the ordinary viewer quite clueless as to which award-giving body is the most credible. One thing is for sure: in this case, the more does not necessarily mean the merrier.
So it’s now just up to the public and moviegoers themselves to draw their own conclusions as to which award-giving body they find as the most credible, not gullible.
