I will never get to visit in my lifetime all the protected areas that you feature like the Apo Corral Reef in Mindoro. Napakaganda. Very enlightening. Very educational.
In the ANC docu series “Our Fragile Earth”, she features the protected area in our country to strengthen public awareness on how to maintain ecological balance and enhance biological diversity, as produced by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
"’Our Fragile Earth’ aims to educate citizens on our protected areas, so that we could foster national consciousness so that people will be compelled to do something to protect our biodiversity and natural resources to achieve sustainability," says Loren.
"We must all understand the significance of these protected areas to our daily lives, because effectively managed PAs play a critical role in the country's food security and can help protect vulnerable communities by reducing the impact of natural hazards.”
Watching it is like traveling to the places they featured. Past episodes featured the Apo Reef Natural Park in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro, the world's second largest connecting coral reef; the mystical mountain of Mt. Banahaw highlighting the conservation of the 10,900 ha of biodiversity;
the Camotes Island Mangrove Swamp Forest Reserve, a precious fortress in Central Visayas; the pristine island of Coron in Palawan; the breathtaking El Nido Managed Resource Protected Area; and the world-renowned Ifugao Rice Terraces.
Other protected areas shown are Lake Sebu, a part of the Allah Valley Protected Landscape, home to our dreamweavers, the T'bolis; the Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and ASEAN Heritage Park, a sanctuary to an immense variety of endemic flora and fauna;
Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, a UNESCO-declared World Heritage Site and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature; the Rasa island in Palawan, which is a nesting and breeding site for birds that have unusual ability to mimic the human voice; t
he Sagay Marine Reserve in Negros Occidental and the Verde Island Passage Marine Corridor, an important source of livelihood for over seven million people who engage in fishing and an important passageway for both commercial and industrial ships travelling from Manila or Batangas going to the southern parts of the country and vice versa.
Protected areas are identified portions of land and water set aside by reasons of their unique physical and biological significance, managed to enhance biological diversity and protected against destructive human exploitation.
Since 1992, 113 protected areas have been declared through Presidential proclamations under the NIPAS Law.
