SUNSHINE DIZON gained lots of sympathizers when she played the wronged wife in the hit soap, “Ika-6 na Utos”.
Now, in the film “Walker” (the name now used to refer to street walkers), she plays the mistress of a married cop played by Allen Dizon. Didn’t she feel any reluctance doing the role?
“I love playing out of the box characters,” she says. “It’s always challenging for me to do roles na hindi ko nagagawa saTV, but I can do in films.
"At basta si Direk Joel ang director, go lang ako agad. My last movie with him was ‘Rainbow Sunset’, for which I won as best supporting actress.”
She just finished doing a Kapamilya soap.
“So I was really praying to do a film naman and this came as an answered prayer, at ang ganda ng script. It’s always challenging for me to portray different characters and my role here as a mistress who comes from a family of prostitutes is something very demanding.
"Ang lola ko, ang nanay ko, pati mga kapatid ko, lahat kami, walkers. Di ba kakaiba? So I’m just thankful I was considered for the part.”
Isn’t she worried her kids might wonder about her role?
“Well, as Direk Joel says, you’re just paying a character, it’s not really you. And as an actor, it’s nice that you get to push the limits of your abilities and challenge yourself para, well, maiba naman.
"So for me, wala yun, basta go lang nang go.”
How did she react to the pandemic when it came?
“To be honest, I’m not the type who’s prone to depression, but last year, when the pandemic started, I felt some anxiety. Kasi we all don’t know as to until when this will last.
"But it’s a matter of mind over matter, kung ano yung problema, dapat na labanan ng utak mo. I have my kids to protect so I have to be strong for them.
"And somehow, I feel very blessed kasi in spite of what’s happening, hindi ako nawawalan ng work. Who would have thought that after doing a series, heto, may bago naman akong movie?
"E, nami-miss ko talaga na magpelikula. So ganun lang lagi ang outlook ko, I just look at the brighter side of things and be grateful that my family and I are healthy and alive. And I continue to get to work.”
