THE UBIQUITOUS DIEGO LOYZAGA is just all over the place.
He did five films last year and this year, 2022 has just started but he has already finished three new movies. “The Wife” with Louise de los Reyes is now streaming on Vivamax.
This will be followed by “Adarna Gang” on March 11 and later, by “Greed” with the comebacking prodigal daughter of Viva, Nadine Lustre.
Diego is also now back from his two-month sojourn in the United States. So how was his vacation?
“I just had the best vacation of all times!” he gushes. “I just love the States. I got to reassess my life, my plans. I now know what I really want to do.
"I just love my job and career. I’ve even planned what I’d do for the next five years. My stay there is all just very refreshing. I feel like I'm a new man. I’m in a very good point in my life and I’m a very happy guy.”
Since he is doing one movie after another, what does he do to make sure he doesn’t get confused with the various roles he is playing?
“I read the script first, then I try to get the essence of my character to see how it’s different from the last one I did,” he says.
“Usually, I already have a picture in my mind of what I will do with the character, but when you report on the set, you often discover na iba pala ang gusto ng director and siempre, siya ang masusunod so I just follow him.
"Day one of shooting is the most important day kasi doon mo makikita talaga yung character mo and you’d realize, Ah, ganito pala siya.”
In "Adarna Gang", he is also named Diego and is one of the sons of a syndicate boss, Ronnie Lazaro as Fernando and his very strong wife, Shamaine Buencamino as Valeriana.
His brothers are JC Santos as Juan and Mark Anthony Fernandez as Pedro. Their parents order them to hunt down Coleen Garcia as Adriana, who’s out for revenge to kill their family for the death of her own father, Soliman Cruz as Jose. So how is it working with these guys?
“I’ve worked with most of them and the veteran actors are all very good, so it’s really a pleasure working with them,” he says.
“Marami akong scenes with my brothers. I have just worked with JC in ‘More than Blue’ and with Mark Anthony Fernandez in ‘House Tour’, so alam kong mahusay na cast ito.
"Mahihirap ang eksena namin dahil there’s action involved but everyone is a true professional so it’s a breeze for all of us.”
How would he describe Diego, his character in the film?
“Playboy ako rito, womanizer, impulsive, mainit ang ulo. I did action scenes, may barilan. And I tried hard not to be like my dad.
"But kung lalabas si Cesar Montano in what I did, e di lumabas. After all, I am his son. In this film, I just have to do my best. Kasi kung hindi, kakainin ako ng mga kasama ko sa eksena na puro magagaling.”
Doesn’t he want to be identified with his dad?
“Hindi naman sa ganon. My dad did very well in his career with so many accomplishments. He had many box office hits. He has won so many acting awards.
"He even made it to Hollywood, so it’s really a tough act to follow. Mahirap siyang pantayan. He and my mom also both sing very well. I wish I could also sing like them.”
All in all, he had so much fun doing “Adarna Gang” that starts streaming on March 11. “This is a gangster film and I’ve always watched gangster shows like ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘The Godfather’ series.
"When I was young, I’d play pretend, trying to be a cool gangster so doing a film like this is something I’ve always looked forward to doing.
"And now, heto, it’s a dream come in ‘Adarna Gang’ so I really enjoyed doing the movie and portraying my role as a gangster.”
